The objective of the National 12 Bell Striking Contest is to promote excellent ringing on 12 bells. When the contest was first held in 1975, there were no other striking contests on 12. There are now a number of other 12 bell contests, most of them regional, which provide opportunities for bands to gain experience of competition ringing on 12 and promote more widely excellent ringing on 12 bells. This may provide a springboard for some bands to go on to enter the National contest.
